I know Ansgar, and I’m very familiar with his previous CDs - lyrical, emotional guitar-playing displayed in great arrangements and original compositions - and i wasn’t disappointed, because this CD effortlessly maintains and continues this high level of musicianship.
Many melodies by well-known folk artists are interpreted on guitar. My spontaneous favourites were the waltzes “Josefins dopvals” (Roger Tallroth) and “Valsen till mig" (Esbjörn Hazelius). Swingy 3/4 with such lightness but at the same time a broad spectrum of dynamic expression - wonderful! The interpretation of Melissa Horn’s “Innan jag kände dig” is a further highlight. It’s no easy task to capture the nuances of a vocal performance on fingerstyle guitar, but Ansgar Dälken masters this with seeming ease - the guitar sings, breathes, sighs, whispers ...
His original compositions are of the same high standard, and the wonderful “Norea” is a fitting finish to this very satisfying album - congratulations!
